Who Is HOUMade?
Houston Made is a local branding initiative to support small maker and manufacturing businesses producing locally made goods. These can include artisan and craft-based businesses using handmade techniques to high-tech ventures utilizing digital tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines.
We are actively working to establish an innovative partnership network of community organizations, public entities, businesses and industry leaders to bring this initiative to life. LaShan Arceneaux
In the aftermath of my partner, Coop's, passing, HOUMade became my unexpected refuge. Prompted by Connie Leon's post in the Houston Latina Bloggers group, I joined workshops at the West Houston Institute, seeking solace and a break from grief. What started as a social and learning outlet expanded into a transformative journey, from makers sessions to workshops on exporting and branding. HOUmade led me to the East End Makers Hub event, where the revelation about Kiva reshaped my business aspirations. Empowered by HOUmade, especially Connie, I secured a Kiva loan, propelling me to enhance production and revitalize my website. The profound impact of these connections has been my unexpected WOW moment, showcasing HOUmade's remarkable influence in fostering growth, resilience, and community bonds.

Under the guidance of exceptional Business Trainers, I even revamped my logo and brand name. They emphasized the holistic importance of our brand, logo, self-marketing, and the resilience to persevere. The confidence instilled in me extends to catering to my supportive audience. Networking with other talented business owners has been invaluable. I wholeheartedly recommend these workshops to fellow entrepreneurs—it's a gain without any loss. Thank you, Connie and all the amazing staff at WHI.

Fashion + Passion
Melanie Cole
Melanie Cole, Owner of Remarkable Embrace Boutique. Creative Business for Makers Workshop is one of the best decisions I've made as a small business owner. The amount of resources & learning has blown me away & the fact that it's free, this was priceless to me. It's hard being a first generation business owner starting from nothing with no help or finances. When Connie started introducing the workshop to me, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I registered right away. Each guest speaker has opened up doors for me that I didn't know existed. I can scream from the rooftops about it all day long. I look forward to each week and utilize every resource that has been provided. This program can open many doors for small business owners that can't afford to pay for school or workshops otherwise. It’s not just the workshops, it’s the people behind it. Their passion to help others is a breath of fresh air.

Ronda Wenger
In April 2023, shortly after launching RoRo's Retro, I discovered the Maker to Market class at West Houston Institute. This transformative class led me to join the Creative Small Business program, which provided essential skills in branding, communication, and support through workshops and networking with fellow small business owners. I began this journey after leaving my job to care for my mother. The program offered invaluable tools such as public speaking coaching, mentor access, and MakerSpace training, all crucial to our growth. The one-on-one training and the HOUMade Market experience have been pivotal to our startup's success. Connie Leon, the Program Coordinator, and her team have been exceptional, providing resources and opportunities beyond what we imagined. We are incredibly grateful for the doors this program has opened for RoRo’s Retro.

Specialty Candy + Family Business
Natalie Garza
My story starts during the pandemic when everything was uncertain and stressful. Despite witnessing my parents' worries, I believed God had a plan for me. One night, while my mom relaxed on the porch with her favorite drink, I was in the kitchen experimenting with recipes and making chamoy for personal use. I shared my secret chamoy candy recipe with my mom, and she was thrilled! She posted about it on social media, and the response was immediate. People were excited and asked if we were selling them. Initially, I hesitated, knowing we were all struggling, but decided to share the joy of my candies instead. To my surprise, orders started pouring in, and people asked for deliveries. My parents and I prayed about it and decided to pursue it. Soon, my kitchen became our office. My mom handled advertising and social media, my dad managed finances and packaging, and my brother sorted and supported. My business has flourished, and I've met wonderful people like Connie, who has been a true blessing. Attending WHI has deepened my understanding of business, and I’ve gained immense respect for self-made and Latina entrepreneurs.
